Infrared is electromagnetic radiation like the sun – but it is the safe and warming wavelengths. There is no risk to health. Short wave infrared provides immediate heat from the moment of switch on - - medium wave infrared takes longer to reach its ultimate heat although it operates in the same way as short wave, heating the surfaces/people it falls on - not the surrounding air.
Because the heat is radiated, there is very little convection effect unlike gas and other electric heating - which means that the person is warmed, not the air.
